Hello Reader,
When I started this newsletter as Needs Improvement, it was an act of defiance...a reclaiming of a phrase from my time in big tech, one often used in performance reviews to diminish rather than uplift.
It represented a step toward owning my story after being laid off and navigating a period of uncertainty.
But just as I’ve grown and evolved since then, this space must evolve too.
Today, I’m stepping fully into my role as a leader, a founder, and someone dedicated to helping others transform their lives.
At one point, I thought about calling this space Exceeds Expectations...A nod to reclaiming the other end of the corporate performance review curve.
I loved the humor in it, but it still felt too connected to that world.
My journey (and those of my clients) is so much more than a performance metric.
After some soul-searching, I found the core of what my evolution has been all about:
Rebellion.
Reclaiming that which I gave away willingly in order to feel safe, fit in, and play the game I thought I was supposed to be playing.
I’ve always had rebellion in my DNA.
Maybe it’s an aversion to authority.
Maybe it’s the influence of too many late nights debating philosophy in liberal arts classrooms.
Or maybe it’s the only sane response to living in a world that often feels chaotic, unjust, and deeply misaligned with our humanity.
I call it a Quiet Rebellion.
Why Quiet?
I’ve spoken up, used my voice, and advocated for change. I challenged leadership to grow and be better. That work is still vital, and I continue it today through Changing Work in more skillful ways, where we strive to transform organizations from the inside out.
But for me, I also learned that focusing solely on the external battles left me burned out, siloed, and ultimately laid off for my efforts.
The shift from Needs Improvement to The Quiet Rebellion reflects my personal journey from trying to change the world from the outside in to transforming myself from the inside out.
Because true change starts within, and when we realign with our values, we’re able to sustain the energy and clarity needed for the work that matters most.
What Inspires the Quiet Rebellion?
The Quiet Rebellion draws from timeless philosophies and practices that guide us to live intentionally, even in the face of chaos:
- Existentialism teaches us that meaning isn’t found...it’s created through our choices and perspectives, even in life’s most challenging moments.
- Mindfulness offers tools to cultivate presence, align our actions with our values, and stay grounded amidst uncertainty.
- Stoicism reminds us how to navigate external challenges with inner strength and resilience.
- Nature's Wisdom reminds us of the grounding, healing power of the natural world. Connecting with the rhythms of nature helps us remember what it means to be human and live in harmony with the world around us.
- Radical Self-Awareness highlights the importance of looking inward to understand our values, beliefs, and boundaries. Through self-awareness, we reclaim agency over our lives and make choices that truly align with who we are.
- Compassionate Leadership emphasizes leading with empathy, authenticity, and courage...qualities that create ripple effects of transformation in ourselves, our communities, and the world.
- The Spirit of Adventure encourages us to embrace curiosity, step into uncertainty, and see life as a series of bold experiments. This playful, open approach helps us uncover new possibilities for growth and connection.
The Quiet Rebellion isn’t about grand external revolutions.
It’s about the quiet, radical act of reclaiming our time, energy, and attention to align our lives with what truly matters.
